Keep your exhibit up with the times

Don't throw your old exhibit away until you have looked into refurbishment. Keep your exhibit up with the times by consulting your exhibit house to try and lighten up your exhibit and make it more cutting edge.

It doesn't take a lot of money to repair / refurbish your old exhibit if it does not represent you well respectively. Often times I have seen the folks at Exhibe Corporation take a 14 create heavy exhibit and turn it into a professional looking exhibit up with the times using half the creates and cutting the weight significantly. Trade show attendance is down. Good or Bad?

Trade show attendance is down across the board expect for a few industries. Is this a good or bad thing?

Less attendance is a bad sign and you should cut back on the shows this year. Logic would say this but many would argue that while less people are attending shows, the ones that do attend are the decision makers.

Companies are not sending all of the "gofers" or assistance to the shows anymore. They are sending the decision makers to save time, money and unnecessary expenses. With less attendances and less exhibitors you can expect that you will be seen by each and every attendee as well. Especially with other companies cutting back on display expenses, if you have a well put together professional looking display that exhibits your marketing message the best you will have the opportunity to "steal the show."

Bottom line is that trade shows are still the most economical way to put yourself in front of a large qualified group of people meaning your business will be better served cutting back on other expenses prior to your trade show budget. Especially with companies that have a long turn around time; you will be cutting your future sales/leads out of the mix and could be in worst shape than now.

What does ppi and dpi stand for and what is the difference?

DPI stands for dots per inch as in the number of dots per inch on a ink printer. PPI stands for pixels per inch as in the number of pixels per inch on your screen.

When printing on a media you will have the dpi but often times people will refer to the dpi on a screen image. Technically this is incorrect; when dealing with the dots on your screen the correct term is ppi.

Bottomline is that people have been using dpi for so long and incorrectly for so long that most will know what you are talking about. If you feel like being a smartly pants you can correct someone and refer to it as ppi and then proceed to explain.

Go-Karting in San diego

Why not try go karting! It is more fun than you think. My buddies and I have made it a monthly event. We go on 2 for Tuesdays at Miramar Speed Circuit.

Tips that you can take to the bank.

Trade shows are expensive so save money where you can.

If you have a 10x10 or 10x20 ship your display to your hotel and try to wheel your portable displays into the convention center instead of paying material and handling cost.
Refurbish your old booth instead of buying a new one and try to reuse your old graphics. Graphics are deadly expensive, so if you are only going to use them for one show then get them printed on a less expensive material like paper. If you plan on using them for years to come then print them on film and make sure they are laminated. If the edges are damaged, cut a 1/4" around the edge off and place new Velcro on them; good as new.
Don't hire labor... try to set your booth up yourself, even if you have a 10x20 or it takes you more than 30 minutes. That way if you get "caught" you simply pay for the labor but if not you are golden.
Supervise your own booth setup if you get labor. This will save you 30% and more. Most Unions will charge you 30% of the total labor cost to supervise; if you are their to supervise it cost you nothing. Plus you can control your labor. Make sure they are working and if you don't like their work habits or are slow, FIRE THEM and get another worker. Remember you are paying your labor $65-100.00 an HOUR! You should demand workers of that value. This is not always possible due to the labor available in the city but I hope you get my point. You are the boss, make sure they work and aren't on the phone or something like that.
Check your Union bill. You would be surprised how many times you will find a misc. charge for something and all you have to do is go to the Union desk and ask what that charge it is to get it removed.

Now I have nothing against the Union but you should be fair and they should be too. So make sure the bill is correct and that your labor has more ability than standing around, especially at their wage.

This is an interesting short tidbit about a very challenging part of my job; Marketing. You know that if you have to get in a pricing war or are constantly having to lower prices to be the lowest and make sales just to make sales that you usually will go out of business. The smart but challenging thing is presenting yourself in a I'm better than they are manner on the internet. Especially when you are selling the very same product for the same cost as everyone else. Question: Do you offer the lowest cost? or Do you stand firm on your price and stress your customer service? I think that it is a combination of several factors. I think that you have to try and keep your overhead lower than everyone else and find a happy fair price that will sell in a value that keep you in business while still leaving enough money to service the clients. You also have to worry about presenting your prices too low and what effects that will have. Some will think that it is to good to be true and something must be wrong. On the other hand if your price is too high you may not sell enough of your product and have a tough time to convince people to purchase online. One thing is for sure I agree with Seth that If it gets to the RFP stage, you lost.

Stop complaining and arguing about how many visitors and hits are spiders, competitors and people that didn't mean to visit our website and concentrate on converting that small percentage of real traffic into sales. You know the beat, they drum it into your head every time you meet a new customer. It starts out with "I have a problem." Yikes! The answer must be "I have a solution."

In college, I had an instructor who had a powerful way of thinking and acting toward students. She never offered solutions. She made them come up with their own. If you went to her with a problem, she'd start asking you questions, and she kept at it until you solved your own problem. I can't tell you how beneficial her teaching style was to me. When your customer begins to tell you their problem, make a mental note not to give away the solution. Begin by learning as much as you can about their problem by asking questions. With each question you ask, your customer will be more and more aware of the problem.

Once you have a clear understanding of the problem (you can actually take notes, it helps!), you can begin to ask questions about the solution. Ask if they've tried various things, hopefully these solutions are ones you have available in your business, or can have readily enough.

You're rather obviously breathing life into the solution side of the issue. Your customer is learning more about the problem and finding the solution within the answers to your questions. The products required, or services available through your company will help them with the solution, and they know where to find them, because you've asked them and they've answered (with a little nudging, perhaps).

This week I came across a post by BinaryWolf about EarthFair this Sunday, Apr. 20, 2008. His post caught my interest because of a couple of reasons; it is in Balboa Park, San Diego; also because I am in the trade show industry and always looking for events/shows of interest to market too.

Quite a few big name companies will be at this event of course because of the popularity of the go green era we are in. If you are a corporation and have not noticed the green movement then you are way behind. In any case it looks like a good time and going green is always a good thing; see you all there.

Comparing Domain Name Services

Ah the age old question... Who do I buy my domain name from. I decided to compare godaddy.com, moniker.com and sedo.com for this week’s blog. I choose godaddy and moniker because they are both recommended by my Practical Internet Marketing Instructor and I choose sedo just because I have never heard of this site before.

GoDaddy of course is the most popular of choices due to there excellent marketing (SuperBowl Ad, Etc.). There website is very simple to use and professional done. They have many awards, certifications and are a member of the BBB (Better Business Bureau) which in my book goes a long way in my confidence level when purchasing online.

Moniker on the other hand is a very simplistic website without all the bells and whistles GoDaddy has. They to are a member of the BBB and they seem to be overall less expensive than GoDaddy.

Lastly we have Sedo, which to me was an overwhelming site to visit because it is so busy. Once again Sedo is a BBB member and has several different awards such as “Best Domain Marketplace” for 2008 due there sheer number of domain names available for sale and active domains. Sedo seems to hide there price until the very end which would make it hard to choice between a .net vs a .org if you don’t know the price and have to back track a lot. I also notice when trying to purchase it redirected me to 1&1.com which is another domain name service site. Odd?!

In conclusion, after reviewing the different services available I would suggest and purchase from Moniker.com for domain names. I guess it is mainly because they were very up front with price, not that expensive and easy to use. I guess I am one of those people that like simplicity and like to get things done now and fast… Darn Generation X.

Other recommended sites that are simple to use and don't hide anything is infamous search engine Google.com and other companies like Exhibe Corporation based out of San Diego, California. I bring them up because they are a custom exhibit house who are straight forward and honest. You know a company is doing something right when they are able to retain clients for over 20 years and have been in business for over 25 years in a tough workplace environment like San Diego.

It seems like these days it is hard to find a company that is not so worried as to what the bottom line is but rather building a trusting relationship with their customers to ensure their longevity. Oppose to making a quick buck off of selling people and businesses what they don't want.

What is Net Neutrality? That is what I said when I started to search this current topic regarding the “neutrality” of the content on the net. Since the start of the World Wide Web we have enjoyed the neutrality principle and now the broadband carriers want Congress to pass a bill that would give them the power to control what we see and read on the internet. As I understand it they would have the power to control what content reaches us first and the fastest.

Right now the debate has reached the attention of the full Senate where bills will be proposed on the topic. If you would like to join in the effort to “save the internet” click here and send a letter to your members of Congress to stop Internet blocking and censorship. Don’t let Comcast, Verizon and AT&T tell us what to do and where we can go on the internet!
